- Description: There are several dozen species in this genus. Native to the tropical Americas, many of the species are popular as pot plants due to their decorative leaves and, in some species, colorful inflorescence. They are commonly called calatheas or (like their relatives) prayer plants. Like other prayer plants, the 'Beauty Star' exhibits nyctinasty—its leaves will dynamically fold upward at night like hands in prayer and open back up to catch the morning light. 100% Non-Toxic and Pet-Friendly! Calatheas are highly sensitive to tap water chemicals (like chlorine and fluoride), which cause crispy brown edges; it is best to use distilled, filtered, or rainwater.
